Behind the Scenes: How Our Fabrics Find Their Way into Your Shop

Have you ever wondered how the fabrics in our shop come to life?
From the first selection to the final product image, join us behind the scenes on our journey!

How We Discover Our Fabrics

For us, everything starts with a list of leftover fabrics — pieces that have been sitting in storage gathering dust or that someone wants to part with, even though they are high-quality and completely unused. For some of these fabrics, we only get a single flat photo or even a poorly generated AI image. That’s why we completely understand how hard it can be to buy fabrics online — we go through the exact same process, just with even less to go on! So we’re not offering brand-new deliveries — we offer true finds with real potential. Together, we review the selection: which textures, colors, and feels could inspire your next sewing ideas? Some fabrics seem to call out, “Pick me!” — and of course, we do, hoping they’ll be just as loved by you as they are by us.

How We Discover Our Fabrics

Once we’re at the warehouse, we finally get to touch the fabrics in person — that’s our “wow” moment! This is when the true diversity reveals itself: unique surfaces, patterns, techniques — we learn something new every time and are always amazed by the variety of materials. Most of our team comes along, and we work in shifts since our shooting time is limited. Among machines, shelves, and rolls of fabric, we set up our small photo studio on a big table. With two lights, a camera, a white background, and a bit of time pressure (plus a lot of love for detail), we capture the product photos that you later see in our shop. These days are long and exhausting for all of us, so we always reward ourselves afterward with a cozy team dinner.

From Photo to Shop Image

Back in the office, the next stage begins. Each fabric in our online shop needs six photos — but we take far more so we can choose the very best ones later. We go through about 20–30 shots per fabric, pick the top six, and crop them into the format you know from the shop. Then we check every image for color accuracy and make adjustments if needed so that it matches the real fabric as closely as possible. Perfect? Not quite — but with each shoot, we’re getting better.

From First Impression to Finished Product

Once the images are ready, the next task begins: naming. We find a fitting name for each fabric. Sometimes it comes to us instantly — like with our fabric Coral, which reminded us immediately of coral reefs with its flowing lines. Once a name is chosen, we write a description that highlights the fabric’s unique character. Some textiles even have little stories, and we try to reflect them in the name or description — like our fabric Regatta, which exists only because of a technical test during production. Then comes the data marathon: entering all the technical details — composition, width, pricing, measurements, care instructions, and much more — into our website.

Our Wovena Treasures

At the end of this journey, we hold not just new products in our hands but stories — stories of materials born from conscious choices and a genuine passion for textiles. That’s how every roll of fabric and leftover piece becomes a true Wovena treasure: carefully selected, lovingly photographed, and shared with you.
